“The moon could’a laid em.” ~ with apologies to Mark Twain.
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” ~ Psalm 19:1
“It’s lovely to live on a raft. We had the sky, up there, all speckled with stars, and we used to lay on our backs and look up at them, and discuss about whether they was made, or only just happened – Jim, he allowed they was made, but I allowed they happened; I judged it would ‘a took too long to make so many. Jim said the moon could ‘a laid ’em; well, that looked kind of reasonable, so I didn’t say nothing against it, because I’ve seen a frog lay most as many, so of course it could be done.”
In “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” – Jim was unable to reason how so many of ‘em (the stars) could have been created as making something takes time; and in the case of the stars, a lot of time! Huck, on the other hand, and for the same reason, figured that they “just happened.” Jim and Huck were, perhaps, the first fictional evolutionists.
By inserting human reason into why there were so many stars visible to them, they came up with (to them) a logical explanation.
Written more than 130 years ago, the ideas expressed by Jim and Huck in Mark Twain’s “Huckleberry Finn,” could easily be put forth by evolutionists today. In the case of the heavens, we (the human race) correctly conclude that, so many stars had to come from somewhere. But where?
In the absence of God though, we also look for other answers on “how they happened.”
As Christians, we have the inerrant Word of God to answer these questions for us.
Genesis 1:14-19 proclaims “14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so.16 And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17 And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.”
And again, in Romans Chapter 1 “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So, they are without excuse.”
We can, perhaps, forgive Jim and Huck but having God’s Word before us we are without excuse. The truth about Creation is found only in God’s Word. And, it’s the faith we have, borne of the Holy Spirit, that reveals this truth to us daily.
Holy Spirit, open our eyes, that we may see more clearly, the glory of God’s Creation. Open our minds, that we understand God’s Word; and fill us with confidence to share God’s love, and the beauty of his Creation with others. Amen and Amen.
